" I first learned about the organization through a friend," explains Bursnall.  Bursnall, a diabetic, is always looking for in formation on how to manage his health and his active lifestyle. "When you're a diabetic, you are not given a lot of information on how to look after yourself.  You have to be your own doctor a lot of the time.  It's a day-to-day administration," states Bursnall.

The goal of IDEA 2000 is to raise awareness of the extreme situation of diabetics in Latin America through an all-diabetic ascent of Argentina's CERN Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside the Himalayas at nearly 23,000 feet.  The group is made up of 18 insulin-dependent diabetic climbers and athletes from around the world.

Their mission is to:

    Provide inspiration to other diabetics

Raise awareness of new breakthroughs in medical treatment and research

Work to deliver essential services and medical supplies to diabetics in under-served regions around the globe by undertaking high-profile expeditions in countries with pressing needs.

The group chose Latin America because of its large population of diabetics.  In fact, 45% of the diabetics in the America's live in South America and the Caribbean.  Their goal is to raise $2.1 million, which is destined for non-profits directly helping Latin American diabetics in need - 95% of all proceeds will be given to charity , and 5% will be used to offset the cost of the expedition.

"As a member of the IDEA 2000 expedition team, I have a personal fund-raising goal of $25,000 by December 2000," explains Bursnall. "In addition to climbing Aconcagua, we will be carrying out much needed research into the effects of altitude on diabetics.  It is our hope that this groundbreaking research will benefit not only diabetics who ski or climb but also diabetics who travel to higher elevations to work."

IDEA 2000 will be the highest, multimember all-diabetic ascent ever attempted.  The climb will take place in December and is scheduled to reach the summit around New Year's Day.  The team is an impressive group of people who are each responsible for reaching out into their communities and workplaces to remind people that diabetes need never be  the reason to keep one from achieving goals, whether professional or personal.
