Brian Burroughs |
On the trail of Mt. Pasachoa in Equador |
My name is Brian Burroughs and I am 33 years old and live in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada. I have been a Type I diabetic for about thirteen years now and have done a pretty good job controlling my blood sugars for most of those years. I am thinking about trying an Insulin Pump in the near future to hopefully get even better control over my blood sugar levels. When my doctor first told me that I had Diabetes I was in complete shock and couldn't believe it. The first thing that went through my mind was What about sports? What about outdoor activities? and would I still be able to do all those things I love? Well, as it turned out, I am doing much more now than before I was Diagnosed.
On the summit of Mt Rainier |
I have always loved the outdoors and nature and try to get out in the mountains as much as I can. For the last fifteen years or so I have done many hikes and climbs in the Coast Mountain Range of British Columbia. Most of the mountains I've climbed there range from around 6,000ft to 8,000ft. Then, in June of 1997, I decided I wanted to attempt Mt Rainier in Washington State. I didn't have much technical climbing experience so I went with the local guiding company "Rainier Mountaineering Inc." Our group managed to make it to 13,000 ft before a bad storm forced us to retreat. I managed to control my sugar levels very well on that expedition so in December 1997, I attempted a winter climb on Rainier. Battling temperatures of minus fifteen degrees and thirty mile per hour winds we made it to 11,500ft before we had to go down again. Finally, in July of 1999 I brought my stubborn body back to Rainier again and our group summited. It was the best feeling of accomplishment I've ever felt and from then on I knew I could attempt almost anything.
In June of 2000 I went to Equador and hiked up to the huts of Mt Cotopaxi (15,800ft) and Mt Cayambe (15,500ft) as well, I explored many villages and towns of Equador and even went to the Amazon jungle. In October,2002 I plan on trekking to Mt Everest base camp and hike to the summit of Kala Pattar in Nepal.
When I'm not poking around in the mountains somewhere in the world I love to participate in different sports whenever I can. I also play in a recreational ice hockey league. (It's a Canadian tradition).
