Linda Spears

I'm Linda Spears and I'm 38 years old. My home is in Aurora, Colorado. Living in Colorado has given me access to our mountains on a regular basis--both winter and summer. I have no high altitude exposure but I have many opportunities in the next year, and plan to acquire and use more mountaineering skills. I also enjoy trad climbing on a regular basis. Eldorado Canyon State Park (Eldo) became a second home this summer with daily climbs after work as well as most weekends. I am divorced, with an 18-year-old son. I developed type 1 diabetes in 1996. Last year, I switched from needles to pump--an awesome fit for me.

In addition to the mountain sports, I run marathons on a regular basis. My last was the Rock n Roll Marathon in San Diego this past June and my next is the Roaring Fork Sunday Marathon. These keep me in shape while challenging my competitiveness (with myself as well as others).

The IDEA 2000 project is very appealing. I was told at diagnosis that my life had to change...no running, no mountains, in essence no life as I knew it. It lasted a month. I could and would not live like that. People with diabetes need to know the possibilities available to them and if we have to push the extreme to illustrate those possibilities, that's great. And it would give me the opportunity to do just that with myself also--push the edge to find what possibilities there are inside of me too.
